A bit of catalan history

Well, here is another Costa Brava-Blog. I will try a get a little history across and stray away from the tourists-spots.

I came here first time in 1961 with my parents and brother. We stayed on the camping-site in Blanes. Yes, that is me posing proudly in my first Bikini an the beach. Sorry, about the fading away-effect, must ask Dad for the original slide....................

Here some history of the Costa Brava :

Like the most of mediterranean coasts , Catalonia was also first by the ancient Greeks and then by the Carthaginians populated. The Greeks founded on the mediterranean coast commercial establishments and later coloniesed them. The most important colonies in Catalonia were Empurion (Empuries) and Rhoda (Roses). But remnants of the Greek settlements are also found in the hinterland. Catalonia had also a strong maritime trade. It is estimated that just in the 5th Century some 300 ships near the Cap de Creus sunk.

After the Romans, the Carthaginians had defeated them over Catalonia and hence EMPORION. In the area of present-day the Barcelona Barcino emerged the territory of today's settlement Tarrago Tarragona. After the Roman Empire in the fifth century collapsed,Catalonia was, like the rest of the Iberian peninsula invaded by the Goths (Wisigoths) who came from the north. The Wisigoths declared its capital Barcelona and later integrated Catalonia into the Kingdom of Toledo. Westgothskingdom then fell after the invasion of the Moors. The Arabs reached Catalonia 716th. The residents who wanted to escape from the Moors imigrated to France and the Pyrenees.
